Operation Southern Shield 

Operation Southern Shield is now in effect. From July 15 to July 21, law enforcement officers in Georgia, Alabama, Florida, South Carolina and Tennessee are on the lookout for drivers that are breaking the speed limit law. This is a high-intensity patrol operation for speeding in particular.  Of course, being pulled over gives officers the opportunity to come in contact with drivers and issue other charges.

The one-week speeder hunt aims to help reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries on the highways and interstates caused by speeding. Georgia law enforcement is out on the city, county roads, and interstates catching speeders. Law enforcement participating in the operation will stop you if you go over 80 mph on an interstate such as I-85 or 10mph over the speed limit on other roads.

The goal of Operation Southern Shield according to Lieutenant Maurice Raine is not to write tickets but to get people to slow down and develop a routine of slowing down, not just for the period of the Operation but on a daily basis. Organizers say that there is no warning; if you are caught you will get a citation. 

Operation Southern Shield started in 2017 when The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported nearly one-third of traffic deaths in the United States were related to speeding. Last year, the Georgia Department of Transportation saw another increase in speed-related fatalities, with 70% of fatalities in crashes caused by unsafe driving behaviors, including distractions, impairment, speeding or driving too fast for conditions. Last year alone saw 12,500 citations handed out during the Operation Southern Shield.  That number is likely to increase this year. 

Georgia State troopers are leading the charge, but county sheriff's deputies and many municipal or city police officers will be taking part as well.
